It started when I was a boy. My parents used to walk a couple of blocks down the street for an afternoon drink. Back in '75 it wasn't unheard of that kids could walk into bars when accompanied by their parents. Can you believe it? Well, my parents wanted to spend time talking with friends, they certainly didn't want to spend time watching my brother and I.
"Here's a quarter go play pool!" they would say to us enthusiastically and my brother and I were off for hours of fun. Didn't know what we were doing of course, I was only five and my brother four years of age. Through the years we learned the game and we both developed a stroke; that was about all...
Throughout grade school and high school we played the game. We both usually won as most people didn't stroke the cue straight and wouldn't pocket balls. Every summer my brother and I would play for the coming year's lunch money and I always won. (I actually still feel guilty about that). My father, Frank Alvarez Jr., was a great road player. He made quite a bit of money in the days of gambling and was able to travel the country. I actually did not know my father from the ages of 5-17, so I was not able to "tap" into his talent until later later in life.
Stay Tuned...
